Interstate 70 in Missouri and Illinois

高速道路７０号、ミズーリ州からイリノイ州にかけて

Interstate 70 is the most important highway to tourists who arrive at Lambert-St. Louis Airport. It runs across the States of Missouri and Illinois from east to west, almost horizontally on the map.

高速道路７０号はランバート・セントルイス国際空港に到着する旅行客には最も重要なハイウェイです。この高速はミズーリ州およびイリノイ州を東から西へほぼ真横に横断しているからです。

When you drive to the east from the airport, you first cross the Mississippi River and enter Illinois. When you go further eastward, you will get to the point where Interstate 55 splits off to the north.

空港から東にむけて走ると、まずミシシッピ川を渡りイリノイ州に入ります。更に東に進むと、高速道路５５号が北へと枝分かれするポイントに出ます。

When you take 55, you will get to Springfield, Illinois, which is the capital of the State of Illinois and famous for President Lincoln's home. 55 eventually leads you to Chicago.

この５５号を進むとスプリングフィールドに行きます。スプリング・フィールドはイリノイ州の州都であり、かってのリンカーン大統領の私邸がある場所として有名でもあります。５５は最終的にあなたをシカゴへと運んでくれます。

When you go straight passing the point off to 55, you will come to another northward splitting point, where Interstate 57 branches off to the north. 57 takes you to Arcola Illinois, which is famous for its largest Amish communities in Illinois.

さきほどの分岐点をそのまま直進すると、やがてもう一つの分岐点に出ます。そこから高速道路５７号が北へと枝分かれしていきます。この５７号を進むとイリノイ州アーコラに出ます。アーコラはイリノイ州最大のアーミッシュのコミュニティがあることで有名な町です。

Going further north, you will get to Champaign-Urbana where the University of Illinois main campus is located. Like 55, 57 finally takes you to Chicago.

更に進むとイリノイ州立大学のメイン・キャンパスが立地するシャンペーン・アーバナに行きます。５５と同様に、５７も最後にはあなたをシカゴへと運びます。

When you drive west on 70 from the airport, you will soon cross the Missouri River just before the City of St. Charles. This city is worth stopping by because it was the first capital of the State of Missouri and its downtown is full of old brick houses. (You may want to have a cup of coffee at Starbucks near the Exit 229B.)

高速道路７０号を空港から西に進むと、間もなくセント・チャールズの町の手前でミズーリ川を渡ります。このセント・チャールズには立ち寄る価値があります。ミズーリ州の最初の州都でありダウンタウンは古くからのレンガ作りの家々にあふれているからです。（ＥＸＩＴ２２９Ｂを出たところにあるスターバックスでコーヒーを飲みたくなるかも。）

Then, in about 30 minutes you will find the Exit 210B at which you can merge to U.S. Route 61 North. 61 will take you to Hannibal, Missouri, which is that world-famous Tom Sawyer's home town.

セント・チャールズから３０分ほど走るとＥＸＩT２１０Ｂが現れます。ここで国道６１号北行きに合流できます。６１号を北に進むとミズーリ州ハンニバルに出ます。ハンニバルはあの世界的に有名なトム・ソーヤの古里です。

When you go further west passing this exit, you will get to Columbia, Missouri, which is the fourth biggest city in Missouri and is known as a university town. The main campus of the University of Missouri is located in this city. There is also a big mall at the west end of the city. You may want to browse in this mall. (Leave 70 at Exit 124 to get to the mall.)

さて、７０号をそのまま西に行くとミズーリ州コロンビアに着きます。コロンビアはミズーリ州第四の都市で大学町として知られています。ミズーリ大学のメイン・キャンパスはこの町にあります。町の西の端には巨大なモール（商業施設）もあります。ここでウィンドウ・ショッピングするのも良いかもしれませんね。(モールに行くにはＥＸＩＴ１２４で７０を出ます。）

Going furher west, you will arrive in Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City is the second largest city in this state, and the birthplace of Kansas City Jazz. You may have heard of Count Basie, Charlie Parker, and Coleman Hawkins. In case you are a Major League baseball fan, I must say that this city is franchized by Kansas City Royals.

さらに西に進むとカンザス・シティに到着します。カンザス・シティはミズーリ州第二の都市でカンザス・シティジャズが生まれた町です。カウント・ベイシーやチャーリー・パーカー、またコールマン・ホーキンズといったジャズの巨人たちの名前を耳にしたことはないでしょうか。もしあなたがメジャーリーグのファンなら、カンザス・シティ・ロイヤルズがこの町を本拠としていることも申し述べておきましょう。

Kansas City is located at the very west end of Missouri. Crossing a big river, you will be in the next state, the State of Kansas. Still, you will remain in Kansas City. (Strange enough, isn't it?)

カンザス・シティはミズーリ州の最西端にあり、カンザス川にかかる橋を渡ればカンザス州に入りますが、それでもそこはまだカンザス・シティです！(不思議ですよね。）

Interstate 70 crosses the entire Kansas and eventually ends midway in Utah.

高速７０号はカンザス州を横断し、次のユタ州の中ほどで終点を迎えます。
